How to configure a Netgear Nighthawk router for NBN or Fixed Wireless

Configuring a Netgear Nighthawk router for either Pentanet NBN or Pentanet Fixed Wireless is quick and easy. Here’s how:

Before you begin

You’ll need to know whether you’re on a fixed wireless service, or an NBN service. If you’re on NBN, you’ll also need to know your NBN technology type.

You will also need to know your Pentanet PPPoE authentication username and password.

You can find all of this information in your customer portal (at https://my.pentanet.com.au), or just reach out to the team if you’re unsure.

Configuring your Netgear Nighthawk

  1. Connect a PC or laptop to the Netgear router via an ethernet cable. (You can also connect to your router via Wi-Fi, but Ethernet is recommended to make the process easier.)

  2. Open your web browser, and type: http://routerlogin.net. Log in to the router using the default username admin and the default password admin. If you don’t know the password and can’t log in, you may need to factory reset the unit.

  3. Select ‘Internet’. If the ‘Select Country’ menu appears, select 'Australia’.

  4. From the ‘Select Internet Service Provider’ menu, select ‘Other’.

  5. From the Transfer Mode menu, select VDSL(PTM) if your connection type is a NBN FTTN service. For any other type of service, select ‘Ethernet WAN’.

  6. Make sure that the ’Enable This Interface’ check box is selected.

  7. Scroll down to the 'Does your Internet connection require a login?’ section and select the ‘yes’ radio button. The page will adjust.

  8. Enter your Pentanet username and password. Make sure to enter your usename in all lowercase letters. Your password is case-sensitive.

  9. If your service type is Fixed Wireless or NBN FTTP (Fibre), leave ‘Use VLAN ID’ field blank. For any other type of service, enter the VLAN ID 100.

  10. Leave all other settings as their defaults, and you’re done! Hit Apply and you should be online.
